Interning as a Speech Therapist in Tanzania with Mbassa Adventures

All Speech Therapy interns in Tanzania must have completed at least two years of education in speech therapy or a similar field by the time they join this project. As a Speech Therapy intern with Mbassa Adventures, you can have a significant impact on helping children to repair their communication impairments and build an increased confidence in them. This project is a great opportunity to enrich lives while adding valuable experience to your resume.
Interns who take part in this project will be positioned at a rehabilitation center or special needs schools. The Speech Therapy program at the center emphasizes on refining the daily living skills of children. You will be involved in various activities, including to help assess, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, and Autism. You will also assist with the development of individual treatment programs for different patients.

This project requires interns to practice high levels of patience, be motivated, and emulate empathy. Although results may be a gradual process, it is rewarding to see the ultimate improvements in the patient’s abilities. We encourage interns to use their creativity and to be eager to learn and practice new skills and methods while working with the children.
The activities you can get involved with on this speech therapy project include:

  • Helping discuss, diagnose, and treat children with speech, language, and Autism
  • Monitoring patients’ improvements through progress reports
  • Evaluating and scheming treatment plans with specific goals for patients
  • Teaching speech therapy exercises/techniques to overcome or remediate problems
  • Monitoring and evaluating patients’ improvements through progress reports

You will work independently, without direct supervision by a local speech therapist. There will be a qualified occupational therapist on site who has excellent working knowledge of speech therapy, who will also assist and guide you when needed.
