Logistical note

  • All Arusha-based volunteers will land at either Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) for International flights or Arusha Airport for local flights. A member of staff of the Mbassa Adventures will meet all volunteers at the airport and will carry a placard bearing their names.
  • Kilimanjaro airport is about 50 km (1 hr drive), while Arusha airport is just 8 km (20 min drive) from Arusha town. For convenience reasons, volunteers can also opt to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya or at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. JKIA is about 250 km from Arusha and is accessible by shuttle buses operating twice daily, while JNIA is 650 km away and accessible by country buses operating once daily. In either case, a member of the staff of Mbassa Adventures will pick up volunteers from Arusha Bus Station.

Orientation and Induction

  • All volunteers in Tanzania must apply for a local Business Visa on arrival. This currently ranges from US$250-$300 based on your nationality and country of residence. The visa charges are not included in the Mbassa Adventures prices and must be taken care of by the individuals at the Airport.
  • If you plan to stay in Tanzania for more than 90 days, please contact Mbassa Adventures for more information.
  • The home base of our volunteers is in Arusha town. You will be welcomed to our Volunteer’s house or introduced to your host family for those who opt to stay with our host families, and then have some time to unpack and settle in after your long journey. You will have your induction the next working day. A member of staff will pick you up from your home base and give you a short tour of the city, showing important amenities such as internet cafes, the post office, Forex Bureau, hospital and how to get to each place from your home base, hostel or host family.
  • You will start the day by going through the Tanzanian Handbook with us, including all the necessary safety and security measures.
  • Depending on the time and convenience, you may be introduced to your placement on the same day or the next day. We will show you how to use public transport so that you familiarize yourself with the routes and landmarks. If you are volunteering on a standard project, all necessary work-related transportation costs will be covered by Mbassa Adventures.
  • Our Volunteers house is located in Njiro area, a good location for security and close to the town center. The houses are spacious with garden and external terraces for your relaxation and breathtaking scenery.
  • Tanzanian people are known for their hospitality. If you opt to stay with Tanzanian host family, you will get an authentic Tanzanian home-stay experience. Host families speak Kiswahili and some English. The children in the host families are always eager to teach the volunteers Kiswahili and practice their English.
  • Tanzania has two main seasons. Summer (dry season) occurs from June to November and winter (wet season) is from December to May. In the northern and eastern regions of the country (where Mbassa Adventures is based), the rainfall is bimodal, with two rainy seasons. The ‘short rains’ or ‘Vuli’ lasts from October to December, and the ‘long rains’ or ‘Masika’ lasts from March to May. Volunteers should bring a jersey and jacket with them as it can get chilly.
  • At the end of your placement, we will arrange your journey back to an airport that corresponds to your itinerary.
