Interning in Medicine in Tanzania with Mbassa Adventures

Generally, what you will exactly perform within the hospital or clinic will depend on your level of medical experience as well as by the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff. Pre-university interns usually start by observing the doctors and nurses. You may find more practical opportunities arise once you get to know the local staff and if you can demonstrate a good understanding of local medical conditions.

Facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect in developed countries. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases, and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients.

If you do not have the required skills, your role will be mainly observational and you will shadow doctors and nurses throughout their day.

By interning as a nurse in Tanzania with Mbassa Adventures you will not just gain work experience, but also provide vital support to a busy profession in a developing country. You will see how resourceful nurses have to be working in hospitals that suffer from lack of funding and poor equipment.

This could include ward rounds, clinics, and observing operations. If you have nursing experience and build a good relationship with the local staff, you could be given more responsibility. This may include taking blood pressure, weighing and measuring patients, dressing wounds, passing equipment, and removing plaster casts.

You will normally rotate through various departments in the hospitals. You could spend time in surgery, maternity, general medicine, pediatrics, palliative care, and work with HIV patients. If you prefer to specialize in one area this may be possible.
